The Daryl DeCroix Family Charity is proud to sponsor the Western Wags and Whiskers Gala, a fundraiser hosted every March by the Virginia Beach Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (VBSPCA). Fundraisers like this are critical to their continued operation, and our community benefits greatly from their adoption services, low-cost veterinary care, and ethical operation. Truly, the VBSPCA is a place where community-minded people who care about animals can make a difference.
“It is the mission of the Virginia Beach Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (VBSPCA) to create a more humane and responsible community by eliminating animal suffering while increasing human compassion.”
-VBSPCA Mission Statement
Because they’re succeeding in the face of difficult odds. Just last year they sheltered over 4,000 animals who needed our help, with approximately 90% of those animals finding a home.
While it’s true some of the animals that come through their doors are too aggressive or ill to be saved, 9 out of 10 is an extremely impressive figure that highlights their how effective they are at the VBSPCA. It’s a matter of proactivity. They don’t just shelter pets, they meet their aggressive adoption targets thanks to close collaboration with local pet shops too.
The VBSPCA also has a low-cost veterinary clinic that saw over 5,000 spays and neuters last year, and fixing pets plays a huge part in preventing future pets from finding a home. Their clinic treats everything from injured and orphaned exotic wildlife to common house pets with heartworms. In fact, the VBSPCA is one of only a few veterinary clinics in the entire nation equipped for wildlife rescue, saving over 2,000 injured wild animals last year alone.
Don’t let the name fool you either. Just because they’re based in Virginia beach doesn’t mean they only help locally. The VBSPCA is a local nonprofit with an influence that goes beyond Virginia. Their most recent examples include work with The Humane Society of the United States, and also animal rescue efforts in Puerto Rico.
The Wags and Whiskers Gala isn’t the only event the VBSPCA hosts, either. The Nonprofit also hosts a “Dancing For Paws” competition, “Puttin’ For Paws” Golf Tournament, and 5K costume walk to round out an entire year’s worth of charity fun.
“Our goal is to be fully transparent about our policies, and we are very proud of our outcomes. People evaluating our services should know that it is very rare that we do not accept an animal, and the vast majority of the animals we accept are successfully placed in loving homes.”
Lastly, but perhaps most important, is the VBSPCA’s commitment to transparency and openness. Rescuing animals is a tough job, both physically and emotionally. They’re an organization that’s honest about the challenges they face, their successes prove they’re definitely worth donating to.
